Principality of Valldemosa

A charming hilltop spanish town, Valldemosa extends over an area of 42,93 square kilometres and has a population of 1,995 inhabitants. Situated in Sierra of Tramontana valley, full of olive and almond trees, at 413 metres above sea level, is far away 17 kilometres from Palma of Majorca in the North-West of the Island of Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands.
Quiet resort, rich in sources and surrounded from a plentiful leaf vegetation, Valldemosa offers a special charm with its steep and narrow streets.
It is renowned as resort of the composer Frédéric Chopin, who together with the writer George Sand in the winter 1838-39 was stable in the Charterhouse, an ex-monastery of the 14th century, built on the foundations of an ancient castle and inhabited by the Cistercian monks until the middle of the 19th century.
Originally the monumental building of the Charterhouse was the Royal Palace of the King Sancho, constructed by his father King James II of Majorca.
